What is HYROX?
HYROX is a race that combines running with functional exercises. The format is identical all over the world – you can compare your race result with someone who competed in Berlin, London or New York.
Every race looks the same:
8 × 1 km of running, with one functional exercise station after each kilometre.
That’s 8 km of running in total, broken up by eight tasks:
1. SkiErg – 1,000 metres on the ski ergometer
2. Sled Push – pushing a weighted sled
3. Sled Pull – pulling the sled
4. Burpee Broad Jumps – burpees with a forward jump
5. Rowing – 1,000 metres on the rower
6. Farmers Carry – walking with a weight in each hand
7. Sandbag Lunges – lunges with a sandbag on your back
8. Wall Balls – throwing a medicine ball at a target
If you train with us, you already know most of these movements from the gym – wall balls, the rower, sleds and farmers carries are our bread and butter. HYROX simply puts them together into a fixed, repeatable whole. And it’s that repeatability that means you can prepare for it in a really targeted way.
Is HYROX for beginners?
It’s the question we hear most often – and the answer is yes. HYROX isn’t reserved for professional athletes. Yes, elite athletes battle it out at the front of the field, but the vast majority of participants are simply people who like having a training goal. The average finishing time is just over an hour – a distance that, with the right preparation, is within reach of anyone who trains regularly.
You can race:
solo – you complete the whole course on your own,
as a pair (doubles) – you share the stations and the distance,
as a relay – a team of four splits the course between them.
Doubles and relays are a great way to do your first race – you can try it alongside someone more experienced and soak up the race atmosphere without the pressure of everything depending on you. At Enklawa there’s always someone who has raced before and is happy to take you under their wing.
How to prepare for HYROX while training at Enklawa
Good HYROX preparation rests on two pillars: running endurance, and strength and fitness in functional exercises. The hardest part is switching smoothly between running and strength work – that transition is what hits athletes hardest if they’ve only trained one of the two. The good news is that if you do CrossFit regularly, you already have a solid base for both. And if you want more targeted preparation, we have something on the schedule made exactly for that.
Hybrid Strength and Hybrid Conditioning classes
These are 55-minute classes combining conditioning and strength work – designed, among others, for people who want to boost their performance in running races or HYROX. They’re a particularly good fit if: your main aim is to improve your fitness and build strength, you like a training plan with repetition and structure, and you don’t want to (or shouldn’t, e.g. because of an injury) do complex bar work or Olympic lifting. You’ll find a full description of these classes on the group classes page. If you train with us and haven’t tried them yet, now’s a good time to check the schedule.
Training with coaches who know the format
Our coaches know HYROX inside out and know how to plan your preparation over time – from building a base, through working on specific stations, to tactics for race day itself. If you’re aiming for a particular time or want to work on a weak link, talk to a coach in class or consider personal training. We also have all the equipment used in the race: SkiErgs, sleds, rowers, wall balls, sandbags and ergometers. You train on exactly what you’ll face on the day – no surprises on race day.
